Blackjack Card Values

What Cards are Worth in Blackjack

Playing Blackjack has to be placed among the most popular activities in both actual land-based casinos but also in virtual online casinos. Most casinos, if not all casinos, will offer different renditions of Blackjack in their gambling portfolio. Missing out on this card game would instantly lead to players being upset which is easily understandable also. Blackjack games are simple to play and Blackjack rules are truly not hard to understand.

The basic strategy without further ado is to hit the number 21 or at least come as close to this magic number without crossing the threshold. At the same, a player nevertheless has to beat the dealer’s hand which is the main competitor when it comes to winning. In general, a Blackjack game uses decks of 52 cards whereas the number of decks can differ from single-deck blackjack to other versions of the game which have multiple decks. This article won’t be one about correct strategy with which players can lower the house edge but more about the first important aspect of gameplay: Blackjack card values!

Blackjack: All Card Values

Blackjack games have a clear advantage when it comes to card games since a player does not have to worry about or bother himself with the card suits. The running count is not based upon the availability of a certain mix of suits or anything similar but solely upon the numerical value of the cards. This goes in a player’s favor because it keeps the Blackjack rules pretty much self-explanatory and organic to follow up on.

Usually, one to seven players are participating at a given Blackjack table. Before the dealer deals the Blackjack hand each attending player is supposed to make an initial bet. After this has been successfully done, each player receives the first two cards. The difference between the player’s hand and the dealer’s hand is that a player’s Blackjack hand is dealt face up. Meanwhile, the dealer’s cards leave one out of two cards hidden in terms of a down card. The second card is therefore not actually known to the player.

This is the main starting point for a Blackjack game. From here on a player can decide to hit a further card, to double up (double the original bet while only one more card is dealt), to split (each of the two cards used for a separate, additional bet if showing the same value), or to stand. After you have made your decisions, the dealer reveals his down card. If the dealer’s score equals 17 or more (Dealer stands at 17), he will not deal himself further cards. If he has 16 or less, dealers hit in order to draw additional cards until he reaches 17 or more. In case the dealer busts (exceeding 21 equals a dealer bust), you win. The strict rules do not let him double or split. This is the player’s advantage!

Now, as soon as both the player as well as the dealer got their first two cards, it is all about the real money incoming or being lost as a result from:

  • Natural Blackjacks: Combination of an ace valued card and a ten-card (jack, queen, king, or 10) – PLAYER WINS. This pays 3:2 of the initial bet.
  • You get a 21 or less but see the dealer busting (goes beyond 21)  – PLAYER WINS. This pays 1:1 of the original stake.
  • The sum of the dealer’s cards is higher – PLAYER LOSES.
  • When you play Blackjack and bust yourself, the card game round is a loss for you.
  • Whenever the counting cards are combined and both the dealer and the player end up with the same score, the bet is returned to your bankroll. This is called a Push!
